Parrot Care Training

Continuing our commitments for bird conservation in Indonesia, on 28th-29th November 2024, we delivered a training for Parrot Care Management to Sorong, West Papua Forestry (BBKSDA) staffs. This training is aiming for capacity building for forestry staffs who already worked hard in protecting animals from smugglers. Therefore, the confiscated animals, especially parrots which are often found in a big amount of quantity, can be taken care correctly for rehabilitation before release to the west papuan forests again.

This training is organized by Fauna and Flora International who has collaborated with Forestry Department of Indonesia smoothly along these years. We were representing our conservation foundation of the Yayasan Paruh Bengkok Indonesia. Besides Husbandry and Care for the confiscated parrot species we also included a presentation about differentiating between the species and subspecies of the parrot species, so when the time comes for conducting releases, the right species and subspecies will be released in the right distribution location.

Not less than 15 people joining the training. They are consisted of forest police, forest rangers, bird keeper, and even the Head of Sorong Forestry Department who are really enthusiasts and actively raising questions. Therefore the presentation went with a very good discussion of many cases.

In the end of the training session, we did a simulation of rescuing a Sulphur-crested cockatoo from someone’s house and carefully move it to BBKSDA Sorong facilities. We also having more discussions about medicinal drugs in their rehabilitation and animal clinic facility.

For us, the conservation of the species goes hand in hand with birdwatching.
