Moyo Island Yellow Crested Cockatoo

With Yayasan Paruh Bengkok Indonesia, we have held population survey for this Yellow crested cockatoo (Cacatua sulphurea occidentalis), mapping their natural nest trees, and putting some nest boxes in Moyo Island forest. From the March 2024 survey, the population of this cockatoo in Moyo Island is 51 individuals.

There are some threats from human which we recognized during the activities there, such as poaching, logging and land conversion. Which is why, one of our program at that time was placing some nest boxes to help their breeding process. Unfortunately, after some months of monitoring, none of the nest boxes were used by the cockatoo. They did perch and playing on the trees we put the nest boxes, but they never get inside the boxes.

One of the good things is, the trees where we install the nest boxes, none of them being cut off by the villagers. Even though it is located right next to their crops land. Now, the conservation programs are being executed by the Forestry Department with the UNDP support. Hopefully this species will thrive again in Moyo Island and also other islands where they use to live in the past.
