Highlights of Sulawesi-Halmahera

Maleo is definitely the most highlighted species of our Sulawesi-Halmahera trip in September-October 2024. We visited the breeding ground of the species and found 37 individuals coming in one morning. This megapode went to a white sandy beach of Sulawesi and dig holes with their strong legs before lay their eggs inside the hole and bury them with the sand. After that, they will let the heat of the sand help to incubate the eggs.

Other bird that comes to our surprise is this magnificent looking Sulawesi Hawk-Eagle (Nisaetus lanceolatus). We found it perched on a horizontal branch watching the surroundings for any moving targets.

In Halmahera, Wallace Standardwing Bird of Paradise is a must see species. Of course we saw it well from a tower hide inside Aketajawe National Park. Inside the park the biggest pitta called Ivory breasted pitta also seen and photographed very well by us and by our guests.

Please enjoy some other species we saw during this trip by scrolling down, including one amazingly cute mammals which we were not expected to see them. Not only one but three individuals of Sulawesi Bear Cuscus.
