Cockatoo Trip

The Sumba cockatoo ( Cacatua citrinocristata) clings precariously to existence, its wild
population dwindling at an alarming rate. Habitat loss, primarily driven by deforestation
for agriculture and logging, is a major contributing factor, severely limiting the availability
of crucial nesting trees – a vital resource for breeding and survival. This dwindling
habitat shrinks the already limited range of the species, concentrating the remaining
birds into smaller, more vulnerable pockets. Compounding this ecological pressure is
the persistent threat of illegal trapping for the lucrative pet trade. The high demand for
these striking birds, coupled with weak enforcement of conservation laws, fuels a
relentless poaching cycle, further decimating the already fragile population and
hindering any natural recovery. The combined effect of habitat destruction and illegal
trapping creates a double bind, pushing the Sumba cockatoo ever closer to the brink of
extinction. Urgent and concerted conservation efforts are desperately needed to
address both threats simultaneously if this magnificent bird is to have any hope of a
future in the wild.
January West Papua

We might comment about this trip with “It is much better to have light rain birding time in West Papua than the winter snow in Europe”.
New Partnership With OPTISAN OPTICS

t is official!!!
Starting December 2024, we are now having a new collaboration with one of the best optic producers in Asia, The OPTISAN OPTICS. They are from Taiwan and have been producing binoculars and monocular (spotting scope) for birding since 1998. We met them in Asian Bird Fair 2024 in the Philippines and clicked with fruitful discussions. No need to wait for long for both BIRDING INDONESIA and OPTISAN OPTICS to decide to work together in raising the awareness of birds in Indonesia through optics equipments
Parrot Care Training

Continuing our commitments for bird conservation in Indonesia, on 28th-29th November 2024, we delivered a training for Parrot Care Management to Sorong, West Papua Forestry (BBKSDA) staffs. This training is aiming for capacity building for forestry staffs who already worked hard in protecting animals from smugglers. Therefore, the confiscated animals, especially parrots which are often found in a big amount of quantity, can be taken care correctly for rehabilitation before release to the west papuan forests again.

Black Winged Myna Survey in Bali

Since 2021 we helped and accompanied several organizations to do population survey for this endangered Black winged myna (Acridopteres melanopterus tertius) in Bali. This October 2024, the population on the southern part of Bali remains only 11 individuals. Where we did a 3 days survey (morning and afternoon time) on 4 different locations simultaneously. We believe, this population in the southern part of Bali, is the only remaining population which live at the outside of conservation area in Bali.
